The Department of Defense identification number, formerly referred to as the Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier (EDIPI), is a unique 11-digit number that is associated with personnel and their Common
Access Card (CAC). The DoD ID is assigned to each person registered in the Defense Enrollment and Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). This includes government civilians, active duty military, dependents,
reservists, retirees and contractors. In time, the DoD ID number will replace the SSN in many Department of the Navy and DoD business processes.
